34F   The Death Of The Old Self

Bible Study Lessons Table

The old self has to die first and and be buried with Christ through baptism into his death.

34F.1   All those who have baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death, in what are they dead to?

In Romans 6:11, this is written:

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (RSV)

They are considered dead to sin.

In Romans 6:6, it is further explained:

We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. (RSV)

Their old self was nailed with Christ on the cross, so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and it might no longer be enslaved to sin

34F.2   What is that old self that has been put to death with Christ on the cross?

In Ephesians 4:22, we are told:

that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, (NAS)

The same verse in other version of the bible:

So get rid of your old self, which made you live as you used to—the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires. (TEV)

The old self that has been put to death with Christ on the cross is referred to as "their former manner of life" that was destroyed by its deceitful desires.
